Module 03 · AI Agent Assistants

Agronomist

Agronomist plans crops, water, and nutrients for a farm or agtech company, watches the weather, reads soil tests and field imagery, and works out margins.

Agronomist is the assistant that plans the land and the farm's business with you. You tell it where you farm, what is in each field, and what you want from the season. It builds a farm profile, plans crops and rotations, watches the weather, works out water and nutrients, keeps a scouting log, reads field and satellite imagery you give it, and puts numbers under all of it. It shows the source or the assumption behind every figure.

Checkpoint

Agronomist plans and drafts. It never gives a pesticide, veterinary, or legal dose as final advice: the product label, a licensed adviser, a vet, or the authority decides, and it tells you which. A suspected notifiable plant or animal disease goes to the authority first. Ordering inputs, contacting a buyer or supplier, mailing a plan, adding calendar events, submitting an application, and anything that spends all wait for your Approve.

What it does#

  • Build a one-page farm profile and a ranked 30 day plan from what you tell it.
  • Plan crops and rotations field by field, with sowing and harvest windows from frost dates and degree days, and a calendar you can approve.
  • Watch the weather for each field and say what it means for spraying, sowing, irrigation, and harvest, with a routine for daily alerts.
  • Work out when and how much to irrigate from crop water use, rain, soil, and what your system can deliver.
  • Read a soil test next to the lab's own method, build a nutrient budget, and plan lime and fertiliser timing.
  • Keep a scouting log, rank likely causes of a problem with how to confirm each, and lay out the options in integrated pest management order.
  • Read satellite, drone, sensor, and yield exports you attach, draw field maps and zones, and list where to walk and sample.
  • Work out margin per crop, break-even, sensitivity, and cash flow by month.
  • Follow market and input quotes from public sources, each with its unit, date, and link.
  • Set up field records and certification evidence, and draft grant, subsidy, and claim applications from facts you give it.

Where its information comes from#

Agronomist says where each figure came from and never says a tool is connected when it is not.

  • Your own files: soil tests, field maps, imagery and sensor exports, last season's records, and supplier quotes, from Drive or attached in the chat.
  • Weather and market quotes, through the extra research tools that use your credits.
  • Google Maps for places, travel times, and local weather, with your own Google Cloud key.
  • The web, through the search and page tools you connect, so it can read an extension guide, a market bulletin, or a scheme page instead of guessing.
  • Your own servers: if a farm management or machine data service has an MCP server, you can add it by address on the Integrations page, and Agronomist reads it like any other.

Its computer has no live imagery feed of its own, so imagery comes from the files you give it.

Skills#

SkillWhat it does, in plain words
Farm briefThe first win. A farm profile and a ranked 30 day plan.
Crop planCrops, rotation, windows, quantities, and the season calendar.
Weather watchFrost, heat, rain, wind, and dry spells for each field, with alerts as a routine.
Irrigation scheduleWater need, soil water balance, and a schedule that fits your system and quota.
Soil and nutrientsA soil test read properly, a nutrient budget, and lime and fertiliser timing.
Scouting logA record of what is seen, ranked causes, and who confirms any treatment.
Field imageryIndices, zones, and maps from the imagery and sensor files you attach.
Farm marginMargin, break-even, sensitivity, and cash flow.
Market watchDated market and input quotes from public sources.
Records and grantsField records, certification evidence, and application drafts.

Example goals#

  • Know what to plant in each field this season, and when.
  • Know tonight whether a frost needs protecting against.
  • Get a watering schedule that fits your pump and your quota.
  • Find out whether a crop pays before you commit the land.
  • Be ready for a certification audit or a grant deadline.

Prompts#

PromptStart with the farm

Agronomist, here is my farm: [country and region, fields with size and soil, crops, water, equipment, the goal for the season]. Build a farm profile and a ranked plan for the next 30 days, and list what you still need from me.

PromptPlan the season

Agronomist, plan the crops for [season] across these fields: [fields and what grew there for the last three seasons]. Give sowing and harvest windows with the frost dates you used, a rotation, and a calendar.

PromptWatch the weather

Agronomist, set up a routine that checks the weather for [locations] every morning and tells me in the thread when frost, heat, or a dry spell crosses the limits we set. Nothing should be sent to anyone until I approve it.

PromptPlan the water

Agronomist, work out an irrigation schedule for [field, crop, stage, soil, system, quota] for the next 14 days. Show the water use, the rain you counted, and the formula.

PromptRead a soil test

Agronomist, here is the soil test for [field]. Tell me what each value means for [crop], build a nutrient budget, and say what a local adviser should confirm.

PromptCheck a problem in the field

Agronomist, I see [description] in [field, crop, stage]. Give me the likely causes in order, how to confirm each, and who should confirm any treatment.

PromptDoes it pay?

Agronomist, compare [crop A] and [crop B] for [field] on margin. Use my own figures where I gave them, mark every assumption, and show the break-even and a sensitivity table.

What it never does#

Caution

Agronomist never invents a yield, a market quote, a soil value, a weather reading, a regulation, or a subsidy. It never gives a pesticide, veterinary, or legal dose as final advice, and it does not give tax, lending, or legal advice. It never orders seed or inputs, contacts a buyer or a supplier, mails a plan, adds a calendar event, submits an application, or spends anything by itself. Each of those waits for your Approve.

Subsidy, fertiliser, and spraying rules change by country and year. Agronomist quotes the official page it read and the date, and tells you to confirm with the authority or your adviser.
