## Key takeaways

- An AI agent assistant takes a goal, plans the steps, uses tools, and reports back, instead of only answering a question.
- In StellarFirm you are the CEO: you set the goal, an assistant with a job (a persona) does the work in its own private workspace, and anything risky waits for your Approve.
- Assistants spend credits when they work, and each answer shows the model used and the credits it cost.
- Start with one clear goal and one assistant, read what it did, then widen your house rules as trust grows.

An AI agent assistant is software that takes a goal from you and then does the work: it plans the steps, uses tools, checks what it produced, and reports back. If you have used a chat window to ask for a draft, an agent assistant is the next step. It does not stop at the draft. This guide explains the idea in plain words and shows how StellarFirm applies it to everyday work.

## What is an AI agent assistant?

An AI agent assistant is an AI teammate with a job, a set of tools, and a place to work. You describe the result you want, and it carries the task through several steps without you steering each one.

Three things make something an agent rather than a chat window:

- **A goal, not a question.** "Summarize last week's support tickets and draft replies to the three oldest" is a goal. It has an outcome and an end.
- **Tools.** The assistant can read files, search, open a browser, or use a connected service such as your code host or your mail.
- **A loop.** It acts, looks at the result, and decides the next step, until the job is finished or it needs a decision from you.

The word "agentic" simply describes AI that works this way. You will also see "AI agents" and "assistants" used for the same idea.

## How is it different from a chat assistant?

A chat assistant answers one message and waits. An agent assistant keeps going toward the goal. The practical difference is who does the glue work: with chat, you copy results between tools; with an agent, the assistant does.

| | Chat assistant | AI agent assistant |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Input | A question | A goal with a finish line |
| Output | A reply | A finished piece of work and a report |
| Tools | Usually none | Files, browser, connected services |
| Steps | One | Many, planned by the assistant |
| Your role | Copy and paste | Set the goal, approve risky steps |

## How do StellarFirm assistants work?

StellarFirm gives you AI Agents, Agentic Assistants for your work, and you are the CEO. You write a goal in chat. The CEO assistant reads it, writes a short brief, and hands it to the right assistant. See [How the CEO works](/docs/ceo/how-the-ceo-works) for the detail.

Each assistant has a persona, which is simply its job: the Coder, Product owner, Marketing, Accountant, Legal, Sales, Executive assistant, Support, Recruiting, and more. Every one is available on StellarFirm web. The full list is on the [personas page](/docs/personas).

A job flows like this:

1. You write a goal, for example "Fix the failing tests on main."
2. The CEO assistant writes a brief and picks an assistant.
3. The assistant works in its own private workspace, a computer of its own, kept apart from every other assistant.
4. You watch progress in Jobs and on the assistant's computer.
5. When the work reaches a step that touches the outside world, it stops and asks.
6. You choose Approve or Reject, and the assistant reports back in chat.

## What does Approve mean, and why does it matter?

Approve is how you stay in charge: risky steps wait for your decision before anything leaves StellarFirm. Anything that sends, deploys, charges, publishes, or creates waits for you, unless your house rules allow that kind of step.

Approve carries out that one step and nothing more. Reject cancels it, and nothing is sent, pushed, or created. Spending your money always asks, with no switch to turn that off. The details are in [Approvals](/docs/ceo/approvals) and [Approvals and control](/docs/trust/approvals-and-control), and our guide to [approval workflows for AI agents](/blog/approval-workflows-for-ai-agents) covers the general practice.

Your house rules decide what is allowed without asking. They are the rules you write in your company brief plus the auto-approve switches in Settings. Every switch starts off, and only you can turn one on. See [house rules](/docs/ceo/house-rules).

## What are credits?

Credits are what assistants draw on while they work. New accounts start with free credits, so you can give goals straight away. Each answer shows which model wrote it, whether Auto picked it, and the credits it used. If credits run out, work stops cleanly at a safe point and asks you, and nothing risky happens in the meantime. See [how credits work](/docs/credits/how-credits-work).

## Which jobs suit an agent assistant first?

Pick work that is repeatable, easy to check, and low in risk if the first try is imperfect.

| Role | A good first goal |
| --- | --- |
| Executive assistant | A daily brief of your inbox and calendar |
| Support | Triage the queue and draft replies for you to read |
| Marketing | A launch post and an email for one feature |
| Accountant | Sort invoice mail and draft payment reminders |
| Coder | One small bug, with tests, as a pull request for review |

## Prompts to copy

Paste these into StellarFirm and replace each bracket with your own details.

```prompt title="Ask what an assistant can do for you"
CEO, I run [type of business] and spend most of my time on [kind of work]. Which assistants would help most, what would each one do first, and which steps would wait for my approval?
```

```prompt title="Give a goal with a finish line"
CEO, my goal is [outcome]. It is done when [what I can see or do]. Plan the steps, tell me which assistant takes each one, and list every step that needs my approval before anyone starts.
```

```prompt title="Ask for a recap"
CEO, give me a recap of what your assistants did today: what finished, what I approved, and what is still waiting for me.
```

```prompt title="Start with a safe rule"
CEO, add this to my house rules: nothing is sent, published, or deleted until I approve it, and every report ends with what changed and what I should check.
```

## How do I start well?

Begin with one assistant and one goal. Name the outcome, the place, and what done looks like. Read what the assistant produced before you approve a risky step, and keep your first goals small so the result is easy to check. When you trust a kind of work, widen your house rules a little at a time.

The [CEO prompt guide](/docs/ceo/prompt-guide) has a checklist for writing a good goal, and [Your first goal](/docs/getting-started/first-goal) walks through a demo path from sign in to result.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an AI agent assistant in simple terms?

It is an AI teammate with a job. You give it a goal in plain words, it works through the steps with the tools it is allowed to use, and it comes back with a result and a report. A chat assistant mostly answers; an agent assistant acts.

### What is the difference between a chat assistant and an AI agent?

A chat assistant replies to one message at a time. An agent keeps working toward a goal across many steps: it reads files, calls tools, checks its own output, and stops when the job is done or when it needs your decision.

### Can an AI agent assistant act without my permission?

In StellarFirm, steps that send, deploy, charge, publish, or create wait for your Approve unless your house rules allow that kind of step. Anything that spends your money always asks.

### Do I need to be technical to use one?

No. You describe the outcome in your own words. The CEO assistant reads your message, writes a brief, and picks the right assistant for you.
